Bring-Your-Own-Book Rebinding: A Whimsical Beginner Workshop


Introduction

Give your well-loved pages a happily-ever-after! In this playful, beginner-friendly class, you’ll rescue a favorite book from frayed edges and broken spines, then dress it in a charming, brand-new cover you design. We’ll guide you step by step—no experience needed—so you can turn a tired tale into a treasure with a sprinkle of whimsy and a dash of bookbinding magic.


Class Description

- What to Expect:

  - Meet the anatomy of a book and learn the gentle art of taking it apart safely.

  - Repair and refresh the text block, add beautiful endpapers, and create a sturdy new hard cover (case).

  - Choose from a curated buffet of decorative papers, book cloths, threads, and playful embellishments.

  - “Case in” your book (rejoin text block and cover) and finish with crisp, satisfying details.


- Who It’s For:

  - Absolute beginners—no prior bookbinding or crafting experience required.

  - Readers, journal lovers, gift-makers, and anyone who adores giving beloved objects a second life.


- What You’ll Learn:

  - Book anatomy basics and safe deconstruction

  - Prepping signatures and simple repairs

  - Building a hard cover (case binding) with boards, cloth, and paper

  - Adding endpapers and creating strong hinges

  - Casing in, pressing, and finishing techniques

  - Care tips to keep your “new” book beautiful


- What’s Included (All Materials Provided):

  - Decorative papers, book cloth, binder’s boards, endpapers, headbands

  - Archival PVA adhesive, threads, needles, bone folders, cutting tools, and press time

  - Disposable aprons and a take-home care guide


- What to Bring (BYO Book):

  - One non-rare, non-collectible book you’re happy to transform

  - Ideal size: roughly 5"×8" to 7"×10", up to ~1.5" thick, with intact pages

  - Paperbacks and most hardcovers are great candidates


- Good to Know:

  - Approx. duration: 2.5–3 hours; small class size for hands-on help

  - Safe, water-based adhesives; wear craft-friendly clothing

  - Ages: adults and teens welcome (under 16 with guardian)
